Frequently Asked Questions!

What are the hours of the preschool?
FALL SESSION:
9:15 - 10:45
  Monday, Wednesday, Friday

SPRING SESSION:
AM: 9:15 to 11:45 Monday, Wednesday, Friday
PM: 12:00 to 2:30 Monday, Wednesday, Friday

How many preschoolers and certified teachers are there?
There is always a certified teacher in the room with a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences and we take up to 20 children in each session (note there are 2 sessions in the SPRING ONLY) and we usually have about that or less in both.

How many student teachers are there?
There are anywhere from 12 to 22 high school teachers in the room teaching the approved lessons for the day to the children.  All high schoolers need to have taken the pre-requisite of Child Development before entering the preschool program.

If we got "in" for the fall, are we guaranteed a space for the spring?
If you are in the fall you are guaranteed a spot for spring and have first choice of AM or PM.  If you don't make the fall, you are still automatically in the spring PM session which starts in February.  Fall registration is in March each year and spring registration is always in November.

Are there any other requirements?
All preschoolers need to be between the ages of 3 and 5 years and they MUST be toilet trained.

OPERATION:

Students who are successful in completing Child Development are allowed to enroll in the Preschool Lab.  Students are required to plan & develop lessons that promote social, emotional, & intellectual development.  Our high school students, who perform the role of “teacher,” implement these lessons.  Weekly activities include: various curricular areas & a light snack.

Philosophy:

Although each child's physical, social, emotional, & intellectual development varies widely, all children must be actively engaged with their environment in order to reach optimum levels of development.  This means that their surroundings need to be safe, open, enticing, & available for children to explore & create.

Parental Involvement

Parents are free to drop in any time to see their student or to scope us out for a potential student.  However, please remember this is a lab class in a high school and you will need proper identification when coming into the building and will then be given a PHS escort to walk you to our room.

We have 1 major party each semester and we also Trick or Treat in October for Halloween.  You will receive an invitation for all family and friends to join us when those times arise.
