Antigone Essay

 

Prompt:  Who do you believe is the tragic hero of the play?  Antigone or Creon?

 

Directions:  In class we classified both Antigone and Creon as tragic heroes.  Write an argumentative essay that compares Antigone and Creon and explains why you believe either Antigone or Creon should be considered the tragic hero of this play.  Your purpose for writing is to decide who you believe should be considered the tragic hero of the play not if they are tragic heroes.  Effectively support your side of the argument.  Remember to clearly state why your side of the argument and explain why you are correct and why the opposing argument is not correct.

Requirements:

·         Must be at least 5 paragraphs long.

·         Size 12 Font, double spaced and standard margins.

·         There must be at least two quotes within each body paragraph and cited correctly. Example:

                 “Quote” (Sophocles Line Numbers).

·         Works Cited Page Required

·         Use at least 5 vocabulary words from units 1-6.  Highlight them in bold font.  An above average grade will include the following characteristics and information:

 

 

            I.  Writing Traits:  40% of your grade

                        A.  Organization of ideas are logical and your essay has an effective attention grabbing introduction and conclusion that ties your ideas together.

                        B.  Ideas are focused, clearly stated, specific, well supported with effective quotations that support the writer’s position.

                        C.  Vocabulary overally word choice enhances the sophistication of your voice and overall understanding of your ideas.  Required Vocabulary words are used                                     correctly.

                        D.  Conventions = the essay is mostly free of errors in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and      paragraphing.

 

            II.  Student demonstrates  understanding of the characteristics of the tragic hero (based    on the four characteristics we focused on in class) 30 % of your grade

 

            III.  Student’s essay indicates a strong understanding of the play and the two main characters.  30% of your grade

OUTLINE

Introduction

                a.  Attention Grabber

                b.  Introduce the main ideas that will be discussed in your essay (briefly mention title, author and introduce the argument).

                c.  Thesis/Purpose statement that indicates your side of the argument.  Explain who the tragic hero is and why.

Body Paragraphs (Write 2-3 body paragraphs)  *Remember*  to effectively argue your position you should discuss the opposing argument.

                P – State your first point/topic.   (Make sure your point/topic statement supports your thesis). 

Write your first, second and/or third reason why either Creon or Antigone is the tragic hero.

Remember to properly lead into your support/quotation.

                E-  Include a quotation that supports your point (Don’t forget to properly lead into the quotation, and provide the correct internal  citation).

                T- Explain how the quotation effectively supports your point/topic sentence.

                E- End your paragraph by reinforcing your argument.  Write an end/concluding sentence that expresses how/why the argument you developed in the paragraph is correct/valid then provide an effective transition that connects your previous argument to the next paragraph or to your conclusion.

Conclusion

                a.  Explain what was discussed and how and why all your argument is valid/correct.

                b.  Include a strong concluding statement that effectively states your side of the argument.
