2011 - Top 10 at

Sarah steals the

champion

We went into
Saturdays finals
with competitors
in five events,
the 3200m &
1600m Relays,
Laura in the
400m dash,
Courtney in the
3200m run, and
Sarah in the
1600m run.
While our hopes
of a team state
trophy were a
stretch, we
still had plans
of continuing
our ten year
streak of top
ten team
finishes.
To do so we had
to have some
good thing
happen.
3200m Relay
- After
winning Heat 2
on Friday in
9:13.75 (#3 in
PHS History) we
had big
expectations
coming into this
one. However,
we knew we'd
have our hands
full with both
Downers Grove
North and
Wheaton-Warrenville
South, who
battled each
other to seeds 1
& 2 in the
prelims, both
hitting 9:11.
We did switch up
the middle of
our order with
Cassidy going
second and Tess
now third leg,
however Sarah
once again led
us off and just
as she had done
in the prelims
went right to
the front early.
She controlled
things through
about 400m as
the pack started
to get anxious.
Sarah held her
ground around
the turn heading
into the 500m
mark and then
girls started to
let loose.
With 150m to go
Sarah started to
fade back to
about 4th-5th,
but closed very
well to hand-off
(2:17.4 split)
almost even with
DGN & WWS for a
battle at 2-3-4,
behind a very
strong lead-off
leg by
Naperville
Central.
Cassidy took the
baton and hung
tough right with
the DGN girl and
even went around
halfway through
her leg.
By the hand-off
(2:21.1 split)
Naperville had
been caught, but
DGN and WWS had
put a couple
seconds up on
us. Tess
got the baton
and promptly got
to work,
steadily moving
us back into the
mix by the 400m
mark.
However, she had
her hands full
with DGN's Effrein and
WWS's Kiple, who
each were able
to pull back
ahead coming
down the
homestretch.
At the exchange
(2:15.8 split
for Tess) we
were down 2-3
seconds and I
knew we'd need a
miracle to pull
off a comeback. Becca did a
valiant job
running a great
split of 2:18.6,
but was not
enough to close
on the DGN and
WWS who were
duking it out up
front. DGN
would pull ahead
for the win in
9:09, WWS 2nd in
9:11, and we'd
finish 3rd in
9:14.75.
Great running by
all. I can't
say I wasn't a
little
disappointed.
Not that we
didn't win, but
that we didn't
top our time
from prelims,
which tells me
we did not run
the best we
could have.
However, that
being said I was
very proud of
this group, as
they helped
Palatine
continue their
history of
excellent
running in this
relay. That
makes 18 of the
last 20 years we
have
placed at state
in this relay
and seventeen of
those years
we've been top-4
or better.
To put that into
perspective, WWS
girls were in
their first
3200m relay
final in school
history. Becca joined
Carly Bates &
Carolyn Currins
as the only
Pirates to be
All-State in
this event all
four years.
3200m run
- Courtney
entered this
event with the
slowest seed
time and was
coming off a
season were she
was never 100%
healthy,
battling lower
leg issues.
However, the
plan was top go
with the pack
and keep in the
mix for
All-state
honors.
The pace went
out fairly
pedestrian for a
state final and
created a huge
pack for the
first mile or
so. Court
never looked too
comfortable, as
she off the back
of the pack
early, mid pack
at one point,
and back to the
back by 1600m
(5:33). I
knew the pace
would get going
soon and she
could not get
caught napping.
As predicted,
just after the
mile things got
moving and
Courtney was
quickly strung
out near the
back of the lead
pack. When
I didn't see a
big move to
cover the gap I
got a bad
feeling.
Just as she had
most of season,
she just didn't
seem to the
strength to push
when the pace
got hot.
She struggled
home in 14th
(11:17.2) and a
disappointed
finish to her
senior year.
It's times like
this that are
tough on a coach
as well, as you
to are
disappointed,
but also
empathize with
your athlete.
You wish you had
something
motivating to
say to cheer a
kid up and let
them know it's
OK, but there is
simply not a lot
you can say.
For whatever
reason this
season just
didn't go as
hoped for
Courtney.
After a stellar
cross season,
it's a tough way
to go out.
Unfortunately,
sometimes things
do not go as
planned and can
be quite
frustrating.
400m dash
- Laura
entered the 2011
campaign with
big hopes in
this event (who
wouldn't after
finishing 4th
here as a
sophomore) and
did her job
Friday by once
again making the
final.
However, she was
one of the last
entries in,
putting her in
lane 9 with no
one to chase.
Laura's plan was
about the only
one you can have
from her
position...get
out blazing and
run for your
life. She
did just that as
she was right
near the lead
for the first
250m.
Around the turn
you could see
the top seeds
close the
stagger quickly
and pass her at
the start of the
final straight.
Laura did a
valiant job of
hanging on to
finish 6th in
58.26.
This finish
makes Laura the
only the second
Pirate to earn
two All-state
finishes in this
event, the other
being Brianna
Officer.

Sarah in the early stages of the IHSA Class AAA 1600m run. Suicide mission or brilliance? |
|
1600m run
- Sarah
came into the
finals with the
5th seed from
prelims by
running a PR
5:01.99.
Ever since last
season when she
ran 5:04 at a
Hoffman dual
meet the thought
of running
sub-5:00 has
been a goal.
However a lot
has happened
since then and
now, as Sarah
experienced much
more lows than
highs over the
last year.
After a
disappointing
4th place in the
1600m at the MSL
meet, Sarah and
I spoke that
sub-5:00 is
doable and to
stop thinking it
"might" happen,
but start saying
it "will"
happen, one way
or another.
A impressive
5:06 at
sectional in the
wind and cold
verified that
she was indeed
in shape to do
it. Her
attempt at
prelims came up
just short, but
set the stage
for one last
attempt on
Saturday's
finals.
I wish I can say
that our plan
worked to
perfection...it
didn't.
Our main focus
going into the
final was to run
fast, break
5:00, and finish
as an All-stater.
Sarah mentioned
leading the
race, which I
was fine with,
under one
condition..."Make
sure the pace is
fast enough!"
I did not want
Sarah leading
the race so
everyone else
ran PR's, earned
All-state, and
we've got
nothing to show
for it, but to
say we helped
rabbit a great
race. So
the plan was,
#1. Get out and
make sure the
pace is quick
and, #2 When
someone comes to
challenge, take
a deep breath,
catch tow, and
do not give up.
The gun went off
and I could see
Sarah make a big
push from alley
4,
position 2 to a
quick lead by
the cut line.
Sarah made her
typical smooth
straight-line
cut in down the
back stretch.
By 200m she was
a clear 8-10m
ahead. I
was concerned
she was a tad
over-excited,
but saw 33-34
click on the
watch and
relaxed.
At 400m she had
an even larger
gap on the field
as no one seemed
to take her
tactics too
serious.
When I saw her
go through in
70-seconds, I
soon realized
that she was
well under
control and the
rest of the
field was still
feeling each
other out.
This continued
for another lap,
as she passed
800m in 2:30.
Over the next
200m, nothing
seemed to
change. I
knew if she
could lay down a
good third lap
the field behind
her would start
to dismantle a
bit. She
did just that.
By 1200m she
still had a
sizable lead,
but you could
see some clear
movement from
the pack.
Crystal Lake
South's Collard
was the first to
go, followed by
a few more.
With 300m to go,
girls were
closing.
At this point I
knew a win was
possible, as
I've worked out
enough with
Sarah over the
years to know
she has
above-average
speed for a
distance runner.
I've told her
numerous times
over the past
couple years
that she has
great speed and
to believe in it
late in races.
Of all times, I
was hoping she
was believing.
She had to
believe!
Just this once.
The girls from
behind continued
to close and it
didn't look
great at 150m
out, but at 100m
to go I saw the
kick start.
Arms were
pumping, head
was down, and
knees were up.
I knew it, I
knew it was
over. She
continued to
pump all the way
to the line.
State
Champ....Sarah
McIntosh.
Wow!!!
I must say I've
never been more
excited watching
the end of a
race in my life.
I thought I was
going to jump
the fence.
The people
around me must
have thought I'd
gone mad.
My voice is
still not back
to 100%. I
quickly grabbed
my stuff and
headed for the
tent to greet
Sarah. I
saw Tess, Becca,
and Court on my
way. We
were all
screaming and
running at full
speed to get
there. I
soon
realized...."What
was her time?"
Our primary goal
going in was to
run fast and
break 5:00 and
in all the
excitement I
didn't even
catch her finish
time. On
the run over I
asked the girls
and we spotted
it on the
scoreboard.
5:01.35.
PR and now #2
All-time in PHS
history. We
didn't quite
reach our goal,
but as you can
imagine, it did
little to
diminish my
excitement.
What a way to go
out. For
all the lows
over the past
year this
definitely made
up for them.
I could not have
been more proud.
I spoke with the
girls midweek
before we left
about the state
meet. I've
told them that
if you watch the
state meet,
every year there
are surprising
performances
that happen.
Athletes
stepping up and
doing something
that they've
never done
before. I
told them to
believe that
could be them.
To believe the
impossible.
That is exactly
what Sarah
did...something
very special
that even she
didn't believe
could happen
until it did.
Congrats Sarah.
We are all very
proud of you.
Did our plan
work to
perfection?
No, but that's
just fine with
me.
1600m
Relay
- We came into
this final off
our 3:55.97 heat
two win to
automatically
qualify.
We knew it would
be a battle to
place high in
this one with a
number of teams
having run low
3:50's or
better.
Our plan was to
get out early
and hop we could
hang in there as
long as
possible.
Morgan, coming
off a PR split
of 58.2 in
prelims, led us
off just as she
had on numerous
occasions this
season.
She got out well
and put us about
mid-pack with
her 58.3
handoff.
We put Laura
second in hopes
of allowing us
to perhaps move
up a spot or two
mid-race.
Laura ran a
solid leg, but
running her
fourth all-out
400m in the last
24 hours seemed
to be catch with
her as she only
managed a 58.7,
well off what
she had hoped.
By this point we
were still
battling for
all-state
honors, but a
top five finish
looked slim.
Meg grabbed the
baton and held
her own, only to
be passed down
the stretch by
MSL rival
Schaumburg with
her 59.6 PR
split.
Taylor was at
anchor and was
in a fierce
battle with
Schaumburg state
vet Jordan
Wagner, who I'm
sure was looking
to bring some
small
consolation home
for the Saxons
after a
difficult end to
their season.
Taylor ran a
great 58.8 PR
split (now #10
all-time in PHS
history), but
wasn't enough
run down Wagner.
We finished 8th
in 3:56.12 and
things look
bright with
three of the
four girls
returning next
year.
While we came
into this season
with aspirations
of a team trophy
things just
didn't quite
fall into place.
We did however
leave with a
consolation 9th
place state
finish to bring
our Top-10 team
finish streak to
eleven years
straight.
Great job!
This was a
tremendous year
for Palatine
Track & Field.
We accomplished
a great deal of
success and I've
learned a ton in
my first year as
head coach.
Thanks first
goes to all the
girls for your
tireless effort,
sacrifice, and
energy.
You all deserve
the success
we've achieved.
Next thanks goes
to our staff.
You all are
wonderful to
work with and
are the driving
force behind our
success.
Also, I want to
thank our
parents.
Thank you for
your support and
assistance
throughout this
season.
Couldn't do it
without you all.

May 20,
2011 - Lady
Pirates advance
to State Finals
in four events |
The Lady Pirates
had some great
performances
Friday at the
IHSA State Track
& Field Prelims
down in
Charleston at
Eastern Illinois
University.
We qualified to
finals in four
of the ten
events we had
entries.
Tomorrows Finals
start at
11:00am.
State Finals
Qualifiers: |
| |
- 4 x 800m Relay quartet of Sarah, Tess, Cassidy, and Becca ran a blistering 9:13.75 to win the second heat. They are the third seed coming into Finals. Tess split 2:14.8 of the second leg to top Ruth Allen for the fastest 800m split for a Palatine sophomore.
- Laura got out well in her heat of the 400m dash only to fade to 4th. However, she did what she needed to get into finals with her 57.96.
- Sarah led most of the entire race in heat 1 of the 1600m to run an all-time PR 5:01.99 to place 2nd behind state cross country champ Ariel Michalek of Osweego. Sarah time puts her #3 on the all-time PHS list.
- The 4 x 400m Relay squad of Morgan, Laura, Meg, and Taylor won heat 2 in a great time of 3:55.97 to earn an automatic spot in Saturday's finals.
- Along with these girls, also running in the finals is Courtney, who will be in the fast heat of the 3200m run.
|
|

While Tess
(center) did
just miss out on
making the 800m
final, she will
be running the
3200m Relay
along with Becca
(left) on
Saturday.
As well, Laura
(right)
qualified for
the 400m final
and the 1600m
Relay final.

Other State
Prelim
Highlights: |
| |
- Jessica Del Re end her career on a sour note, missing out of finals with a best throw of 35' 2.5" on the day, well off what her season best.
- Meg Jump didn't fair well in the field either, as her TJ of 35' 10" and LJ of 16' 11.25" were off her best on not enough to move onto Saturday's final.
- Tess doubled back from the 4 x 8 to run a PR 2:16.93 in heat 2, but was just short of the 2:16.23 it took to make finals.
- Morgan had a great run going in the 300m hurdles from her lane 9 position only to see it spoiled by a hard fall with 100m to go.

May 17,
2011 - Lady
Pirates storm
through
Sectional to
qualify 11
events. |
The girls passed
their final test
onto state meet
at a wet, windy,
and cold
Sectional meet
at Buffalo Grove
last Friday
night with a
lopsided score
of 121.5 to 56
in capturing the
14th IHSA
Sectional team
title in school
history.
The poor weather
conditions and
lack of depth in
a number of
events made for
a gloomy night.
What is
typically a very
exciting and
enthusiastic
atmosphere
seemed to be
missing
something.
Even with the
dominate team
victory we
certainly
suffered some
lows with our
highs. We
qualified in
most of the
events we were
expected to,
while a few
girls were
casualties of
poor
performances and
tougher
qualifying
standards.
All-in-all is
was a solid
night for
Palatine track &
field and we
have a great
shot at doing
very well as a
team this
weekend if we
step up and put
all of our
pieces together.
Race specifics to
come!!!

May 10,
2011 - JV close
out season at
MSL JV
Championships |
The JV squad
closed out their
2011 track
season last
night at the MSL
JV Championships
at Rolling
Meadows.
For the first
time in the
history of this
meet they
tallied team
scores and made
a true
championship
meet. With
a short roster,
in comparison to
some of our MSL
rivals, we
didn't have
enough depth to
cover all the
events and
finished in 8th
place of the
twelve school
competing.
Along with a
lack of depth we
missed some key
points late in
the meet when
Bridget missed a
for sure win in
the 300m LH, as
she fell over
the last hurdle,
and Kearia false
started in the
200m final.
Overall I saw a
lot of solid and
spirited efforts
and number of
girls left with
either season or
all-time
personal bests
marks.
This meet is
always a bit
bitter sweet, as
girls are
closing out
their season
giving their all
the hit season
best marks to
build toward
next season,
while some of
our seniors are
competing for
the last time as
Pirates.
Last night was
end of the road
for two seniors
in Steph
Burbidge and Liz
O'Brien.
Both have been
four year track
members and have
contributed
greatly to this
program.
Highlights of
the meet were:
|
| |
- 3200m relay of Ellen, Jacqui, Allison, & Kirsten took home a championship in a time of 10:18.5, with a the last three legs all running season best splits.
- Ellen came back to win the 1600m in 5:34, leading the charge the whole way.
- We had two fourth place finishes with Steph in the 800m and the quartet of Lorena, Marlena, Bridget, and Steph in the 1600m relay.
- Bridget ended up 5th in the 300m LH, a race she would have won had she not tripped over the last hurdle.
- Kearia ran a PR 29.0 in the 200m prelims.
- Jaime PR'd in the HJ at 4' 4".
- Jeniece PR'd in the LJ at 13' 9".
- Sarah PR'd in the Shot with a throw of 26' 1". (After being hit in the head with a discus!!)
- Marlena had a season best 29' 6.75" in the TJ.

May 9,
2011 - MSL
CHAMPS!!! |
 |
On what turned
out to be an
absolute perfect
night to
compete, with
nice temps and
zero wind, the
girls stepped up
with some
stellar
performances to
add MSL Champs
to the list of
season
accomplishments.
Coming in we
were favorites
to win based on
seeded entries,
but being seeded
to win and
actually doing
it is another
thing. Our
conference is
loaded with
talent and you
have to be
prepared to
perform near
your very best
to do well this
meet.
Fortunately the
girls came ready
and put on a
tremendous
showing. We
scored 137.5
points to
outdistance
runner-ups
Hoffman Estates
(102) and third
place Conant
(86).
As a coach it
was an exciting
meet to watch
and it seemed
every event you
watched
something
exciting
happened for
us. The
coaching staff
is extremely
proud of you
all. Great job
ladies!!!

- The 3200m Relay (Cassidy, Becca, Sarah, Liz) kicked off finals with a strong performance, running 9:25 for 2nd behind the home squad Prospect. Cassidy (2:21.8), Becca (2:18.7), and Sarah (2:17.5) each ran either a season-best or all-time PR split.
- Courtney and Jess went 2-4 in the 3200m run. Jess got stuck with pacing duties early, splitting a 1600m PR (5:25), and hung on valiantly only to be outkicked by XC All-stater Breen of Fremd.
- Laura had a super busy night, making finals in the 100m (5th-12.90) and 200m (2nd-25.99), winning the 400m (1st-57.90), and helping the 400m Relay to 4th. She gave six very hard efforts in contributing to 27 points. Laura's 400m time is her 2nd best ever and is nearing her time from state last year.
- Meghan would win the pole vault (11'0"), place 4th in the 100m HH (15.79), and run on the runner-up 800m relay and the 4th place 400m Relay.
- Meg would win the TJ (36' 2.5") crown, while being edged in the LJ (2nd - 17' 4.5"). She also ran strong legs on the runner-up 800m and 1600m relays.
- Morgan took 5th in the 300m LH with a season best 46.89, while also running strong legs on the runner-up 1600m relay (58.7) and 400m relay.
- Tess doubled up and took runner-up honors in both the 800m (2:17.54) and the 1600m (5:07.16). Her 1600m time was a new all-time PR and now ranks her #9 all-time outdoor in PHS history.
- Becca had a great 800m run (2:20.6) for 4th, running a new open PR, after runner her all-time best split to start the meet off.
- Sarah ran a season best 5:08.56 in her 4th place finish.
- Valere led off all three sprint relays (1600m-2nd, 800m-2nd), & 400m-4th) and jumped a season-best 17' 1.25" in the LJ for 3rd.
- Jessica threw two PR's with her 38' 11.5" in the shot put for 5th and 101'7" in the disc to just miss finals.
- Megan threw her way into disc finals with a new PR 101' 8", earning some valuable experience for the future.

May 5,
2011 - Girls
capture 3rd
straight
Palatine Relays
team title |

Girls all smiles
after a hard
days work in
capturing
another Palatine
Relays team
victory |
This past
weekend we
finally got a
decently warm
day to run.
While the wind
certainly didn't
fully cooperate,
we did see some
temps in the
mid-60's, which
made for a much
more enjoyable
setting for the
79th Palatine
Relays in
comparison to
our prior
meets. We came
out hitting in
all areas and
separated
ourselves from
the pack with
131 points, to
top a tie at 83
bewtween
Barrington and
Fremd. This
marked the third
straight year we
have won the
relays. Great
job ladies.
Highlights of
the meet: |
| |
- Sarah controlled and led the entire 1600m run to take the win in 5:14.
- The DMR of Courtney, Becca, Sarah, and Tess had hoped to break the school record of 12:25.3, but just missed out in running 12:26.0. They won the race by nearly a minute and their biggest competition became the wind, which just won out.
- The FS 800m Medley Relay of Bridget, Kearia, Tess, and Liz C. took the win. This was a bit of a surprise, as we nearly scratched this relay the day or two before the meet.
- Laura took runner-up finishes in the 400m and 200m dashes behind Peoria Richwoods star Brena Detra, who would take home Athlete of the Meet honors.
- The FS 1600m Medley Relay of Bridget, Kearia, Lorena, and Cassidy took 2nd, as Cassidy closed well to move us to the lead, but couldn't hold on down the home-stretch.
- Becca was edged our of victory at the line in the 800m run.
- Jess Lincoln ran a outdoor best of 11:32 in the 3200m run for 2nd
- PV crew of Meghan, Sakura, and Lilli took 2nd.
- Megan O. threw and all-time PR 36'-plus in the shot and with the help of Valere and Jessica won the shot put relay.
- Coach Parks won his 2nd consecutive Alumni Mile in 4:24. On a personal note, this extended my streak of sub-4:30 in the 1600m to 19 years in a row (since my sophomore year in HS). Thank you girls for all your cheers and support during the run. You were a big help.

April
28, 2011 - Lady
Pirates capture
MSL West
Division |
While the
weather was
again less than
ideal (cool and
windy), we were
fortunate to
avoid our third
straight
weather-related
cancelation.
The storms held
off and the
highly talented
and completive
MSL West
displayed some
very impressive
performances on
the night. The
girls took
another step in
the right
direction by
picking up the
MSL West
Division title
on a cool and
windy night at
Schaumburg HS.
We totaled 138
points to
outdistance
runner-up
Hoffman Estates'
116. Again we
took a hit a the
JV level with
our limited
roster, as they
finished 5th out
of the six
teams.
I am very
impressed by
this team. We
have what is
likely one of
the smallest
track teams in
the northwest
suburbs and all
of the
conference, but
our girls
produce. We
consistently
score in a
number of events
and girls
continually step
up when it's
time to
compete. A true
testament to our
dedication and
level of
commitment. Be
proud to be a
Pirate.

- Meg taking home three firsts (TJ, LJ, and 4 x 200m Relay). Meg's LJ of 17' 0" broke a SHS stadium record
- Meghan broke a stadium record as well with her 10' 9" win in the PV.
- Jessica Del Re was a double scorer in the throws (4th-SP/6th-disc) with a season best 93' 0" in the discus.
- Marlena jumped a season bests in the LJ (5th) and TJ (2nd) on the JV level.
- The varsity 4 x 800m Relay of Cassidy, Liz, Jessica, and Tess teamed up to take 2nd in 9:42.7. In the process they smashed the frosh-soph school record set last year (9:52).
- Jacqui and Kirsten both had season bests on the 3rd place JV 4x8 squad.
- The varsity 4 x 200m Relay (Valere, Meg, Taylor, Laura) ran a season best time of 50.2 to take second.
- Sarah (2:20.1) and Becca (2:20.7) went 2-3 in the 800m run. Both were all-time open 800m PR's. Sarah's time put her at #15 on the all-time PHS outdoor list (click to see list), while Becca ran her best time ever, open or relay, just missing the top-15 list (16th best ever). Becca would come back to run another all-time PR 400m split (62.7) in the 4 x 400m Relay.
- Allison ran a open 800m PR of 2:38.0 in the JV 800m for 4th.

- Lilli ran a PR 57.3 in the 300m LH.
- Kearia ran a PR 19.6 for 6th in the JV 100m HH.
- The varsity 4 x 400m relay of Valere, Sarah, Becca, and Tess was edged at the end to place second in 4:07.2.

April
25, 2011 - Solid
performances at
Palatine Invite |

One of the highlights of the meet was Morgan being asked to prom by Ryan McGough after her 4x400 leg. |
|
|
This past
weekend we
hosted the
Palatine
Invite. This is
a seven team
non-scored meet
that allows us
to put girls in
events without
the concern of
scoring points
for the team.
On what turned
out to be a very
nice day, minus
strong winds, in
comparison to
the spring so
far, we had some
solid
performances.
As we head into
the stretch run
of our season we
are seeing good
things
happening.
Girls continue
to put up good
performances and
we really saw
some girls
competing well
in their events.
Having to host
the meet and
being
responsible for
clerking the
meet I was
unable to cover
the same ground
and watch the
races as well as
I normally do.
While I didn't
get to witness
them all
firsthand here
are the
highlights of
the day.

- Meghan Flanagan (11' 9" ) vaulted a new all-time PR and tied Jocelyn Kuksa's school record in the process.
- The 4 x 400m Relay of Morgan, Taylor, Meghan, and Laura won in a time of 4:02.5 in exciting fashion over a sprint dominant Morgan Park squad. This was a very exciting finish with Laura (below) taking over the lead down the homestretch. This is one of the fastest relay times we have put up outside of the state meet.
- Sarah (below) won her second 1600m run in as many weeks in a season best 5:10.9 with a strong come-from-behind kick over DGN's Kothanek. We proceeded to take places 3-6, with Becca (5:15.6), Courtney (5:16.2), Jessica (5:25.9 PR), and Cassidy (5:28.0).
- Morgan Quinnett had a big day (outside of being asked to prom) with a strong win in the 300m LH (47.2) and came back to split :59.8 in the 1600m Relay lead-off leg.
- Tess ran another strong 800m, her third time at 2:17, showing she is ready for a big break-through.
- Erin Rhodes finally busted the 6:00 mark in the 1600m run with her 5:56.6 PR in the JV race, trailing Allison (5:51.8) in 2nd, and Liz (5:53.2) in 4th.
- Bridget Ryan dominated the JV 300m LH in a new PR 52.5.
- Another exciting finish was the throwers 4 x 100m relay, as Crystal (below) would storm home to move us to 2nd.
|
|

The day was closed out with three great finishes - Sarah narrowly taking the 1600m (5:10.9), Crystal holding on for 2nd in the 4 x 100m Throwers Relay, and Laura splitting :57.6 in anchoring the 4x 400m Relay to a come-from-behind win. |

April
18, 2011 - Lady
Pirates come out
on top at DGN's
Ritter Invite |
|
|
On Friday night
we headed down
to Downers Grove
North for the
annual Ritter
Invitational,
our first invite
of the season.
This is a
sixteen-team
meet and is
always quite
competitive for
this time of the
year. This was
our first chance
to test
ourselves in a
big meet
atmosphere
against tough
competition.
After two MSL
triangular meets
the past couple
weeks, these big
meets definitely
have a different
energy and
excitement that
comes along with
it.
On what turned
out to be a much
nicer night than
expected, with
the storms
holding off for
just enough
time, we saw
some solid
performance
across the
board. We knew
coming in that
season best
marks and PR's
would be slim,
given the
conditions, so
our emphasis was
on effort and
competing for
points. I
thought we did a
great job across
the board. We
came away with a
team victory
scoring 132
points to
outdistance at
talented West
Aurora group who
closed the night
with 115 points.
Highlights of
the meet

- Frosh-Soph 4 x 400m Relay (below) of Meg, Cassidy, Taylor, and Tess set a new meet record in 4:08.9, breaking our mark of 4:11.1 set last year. This time, I believe, is also a new PHS F-S record.

- 3200m Relay - The quartet of Sarah (2:22.4), Cassidy (2:27.5), Liz (2:26.0), & Becca (2:24.0) finished 2nd behind the host school DGN in 9:39.8.
- 4 x 100m Relay - Laura, Morgan, Valere, & Meghan placed 3rd in 50.6, a season best mark.
- 3200m Run - Courtney took second in 11:14.4 after doing the majority of the pacing duties in the wind, while Jessica scored with her 6th place effort of 11:34.
- 100m HH - Meghan placed 3rd in a season best time of 16.2.
- 800m Run - Tess showed a lot of confidence by going right to the front in a dominating performance to win by over :04 seconds in 2:17.5. This was Tess' first varsity invite win of her career in an individual race.
- 4 x 200m Relay - Valere, Meghan, Taylor, Meg took 3rd in a season best 1:46.3
- 400m Dash - Laura took out hard and held on for the win in a season best 58.2.
- 300m LH - Morgan ran a season best 47.4 and ended up 6th in a very completive event.
- 1600m Run - Sarah took out hard and was never tested in her winning run of 5:14.0, while Liz C. got right in the mix early and held on for a new PR 5:25.6, a 6th place finish, and beat a number of girls seeded ahead of her.
- 200m Dash - Laura can back after her 400m win to run 25.6 for 3rd place and a season best, just off her all-time PR of 25.4.
- Varsity 1600m Relay - The quartet of Morgan (61.2), Laura (60.8), Becca (63.6), and Valere (60.5) closed the night out with a runner-up finish. Valere showed a lot of guts in the last 50m to over-take a York runner.
- PV - Meghan had to finish with little lighting to take the win with a mark of 10' 0".
- LJ - Both Meg (17' 0.75") and Valere (16' 10") had season best marks to finish 4th & 5th.
- TJ - Meg managed a 3rd place finish, however both her and Taylor were each well off their best in this event.
- SP - Wet condition kept marks low, as only one girl in the top flight threw further than her seeded mark. Jessica would finish 3rd with a throw of 36' 0", while Megan threw 32' 4".
- Disc - Megan would earn us some valuable points with her 4th place mark of 92' 4". Jessica would struggle at 88' 7".
Again, lot's
of good things
are happening.
However, we can,
and should
expect, to get
much better.
Many of you
mentioned things
that you could
have done
differently on
Friday night to
improve your
performances.
Keep working and
continue to
challenge
yourself to get
better.

April
13, 2011 - Lady
Pirates take
care of business
at Meadows |
In the second
meet of the
outdoor season,
and our second
of three MSL
triangular
meets, we saw
some continued
improvement and
picked up a
varsity win in
the progress.
The varsity
scored 83, to
top Hersey with
70 and host
Rolling Meadows
with 32.
Often these MSL
tri meets end up
as glorified
workout days of
some of the
varsity, as they
are eyeing the
weekend
invitational's,
while others are
looking for
improvements and
PR's to move
them up the
depth chart. In
the end, results
can be tougher
to decipher.
However, any
time you're at a
track meet,
usually some
exciting things
happen.
The primary
focus right now
is to see some
consistency and
continued
improvement.
It's always nice
to go out and PR
in every meet.
However, not
only is this
unlikely, it's
impossible. As
you all get
better and your
performances
improve, it
continually gets
tougher to top
your previous
best. It takes
diligence,
consistency, and
dedication to
continue to
better your
best. And even
with that,
nothing is
guaranteed.
When you show up
to the meet you
must then be
focused and in
the right frame
of mind on that
given day for
good things to
happen.
Keep looking for
ways to get
better ladies!!
Highlights of
the meet

- All five girls in the discus (Jess, Megan, Crystal, Sarah, & Julie) improved on their season best.
- Jamie Tomczyk cleared 4' 2" in her first ever attempt at HJ.
- Jessica Del Re improved her shot PR by one-half inch to 38' 5.5".
- Varsity 4 x 800m (Liz, Kirsten, Jacqui, Steph) pulled off an exciting win (10:20.7) to start the meet, with all four girls running season bests and Steph running an all-time PR.
- Liz came back in the JV 800m and stormed to a 2:40.4 to top her 4x8 split and win the JV race.
- Allison (12:34.1) and Erin (12:48.5) ran huge PR's in the 3200m run.
- Tess (2:21.3), Becca (2:24.6), Sarah (2:24.9), Laura (2:25.1), and Cassidy (2:26.1) went 1-5 in the 800m run, as part of their workout. This was Laura's debut for the season in the 800m run.
- Courtney (5:17.3), Jessica L. (5:28.8), and Ellen (5:31.3) ran solid races to go 1-3-4 in the varsity 1600m. Both Ellen and Jess were right at their all-time PR.
- LeiAnn (6:06.2), Abril (6:15.3), and Jamie (6:31.7) ran great in their 1600m race. LeiAnn and Abril both ran all-time PR's, as their previous best was from our XC October time trial (LeiAnn - 6:28 / Abril - 7:07). Jamie was just short of her all-time PR by :06 seconds.
- Taylor and Meghan improved their times in the 300m LH.
- Bridget (:68.0) ran a great second leg on the 4 x 400m relay to move the team back into contention.

April 7,
2011 - Big
performances in
first outdoor
meet of season |
On Tuesday, we
hosted MSL
rivals Hoffman
Estates and
Schaumburg in
our first of
three MSL
triangular meets
of the season.
The Lady Pirates
started the
outdoor season
off right where
they closed out
the indoor
season...with a
bang. High
level
performances,
numerous season
bests and PR's,
and even
continued our
meet streak of
school
records.
We ended up
winning the meet
with 95 points,
to handily
outscore
runner-up
Hoffman with 53
and Schaumburg
with 41. This
was a very
impressive meet
across the
board. Rarely
do you see the
winning
performances at
such a high
level in a
season opening
triangular
meet. Eight of
the eighteen
events had
winning marks
that exceeded
state
qualifying.
Highlights of
the meet
included:
Field Events: |
| |
- Meg Jump (below) broke the PHS record in the triple jump on three consecutive jumps. She first broke Jenny Cowan's record that dates back to 1999 and would go on to top her own mark on the next two jumps. (see All-time TJ list)
|
|
|

|
| |
- Jessica Del Re again broke another barrier, crossing the 38' mark with a new PR of 38' 5" in the shot put, which now puts her #10 on the all-time PHS outdoor list. (see All-time SP list) Megan O. also hit a new PR of 35' 7" to smash her indoor best of 32' 11". Julie and Sarah also hit new PR's as well.
- Meghan continued her consistency with an 11' 0" vault win. Freshman Lilli Bugla topped the 6' 0" mark as she reached her first ever clearance in a meet.
- Meg, Valere, and Taylor went 1-2-3 in the long jump.
|
|
|
Running Events |
| |
- Varsity (Jess, Sarah, Cassidy, Liz O.) and JV (Jacqui, Allison, Abril, Kirsten) picked of wins in the 3200m relay with times of 9:59.3 and 10:56.0. Abril had a big PR of 2:45.2 for the JV squad.
- Varsity 4 x 100m relay (Laura, Meghan, Valere, Morgan) won with a time of 50.8.
- Courtney had a very encouraging run with her 11:16.7 in the 3200m run. In her first 3200m of the year and first race over 800m since mid-February she had the tough task of battling two of the top-tier running in the state in HE's Goers and Schaumburg's Lesiewicz. Lesiewicz would go on for the win in an impressive 10:47, while Goers ran a very solid 11:00. Ellen bounced back well to show she is recovered from her mid-March sickness to just miss her indoor best with a time of 12:12.5 for 4th. Liz O. had a much improved performance with her 12:54.3, not far off her season best from 2010. LeiAnn set a new PR of 13:17.5.
- Meghan (16.7) and Morgan (17.1) went 1-3 in the 100m HH.
- Laura (13.0) and Meg (13.4) went 2-3 in the 100m dash.
- Tess (2:17.9) and Becca (2:23.1) went 1-2 in the 800m run. Both just off their season best performances and PR's from 2010. Tess made a big move around 300-350m to go in order to set herself up well for a great time in less than ideal conditions. Jaime broke the 3:00 barrier for the first time in her career in the JV race.
- Laura won the 400m in a solid :59.2
- Morgan, Meghan, and Taylor went 2-3-4 in the 300m LH with times of 48.1, 50.5, & 51.5 respectively. Bridget won her first high school race in this event with a time of 53.7 in the JV race.
- The varsity 1600m saw Sarah (5:14.0), Cassidy (5:24.4), Liz (5:31.6), and Jess L. (5:35.8) double back from the 3200m relay to go 2, 3, 4, 5. Schaumburg All-Stater Falsey took the win in 5:07.2. Cassidy's 5:24.4 makes her the fastest Lady Pirate to ever debut in the 1600m run. (see All-time 1600m Debuts) The JV race featured some very exciting racing with Jacqui (5:46.1), Allison "Al Fal" (5:46.7), Kirsten (5:53.0), and Erin "E Rho" (6:03.4) going 1-4, all in season best times. Especially fun to watch was the the reemergence of Jacqui, who continues to build back to the shape she was in last fall, and Allison, who missed most of last spring with injury. Allison set a new PR and broke 5:50 for the first time. Jacqui and Allison had a quite the spirited sprint together toward the finish.
- Laura would lose another spirited battle in the 200m to HE rival D'Amico (26.2 to 26.3), while Lorena would take the JV 200m in a new PR of 30.2.
- We would end the meet with a close battle with Schaumburg in the1600m relay (Taylor, Morgan, Becca, Tess), only to get edged, 4:06.1 to 4:07.4. Both Tess (60.3) and Becca (62.9) would run big 400m split PR's.

March
29, 2011 -
Indoor season
concludes at IL
Prep Top Times
meet |
The 2011 indoor
campaign came to
a end this
weekend with the
IL Prep Top
Times meet at
Illinois
Wesleyan
University in
Bloomington.
This meet is
often referred
to as the
unofficial
indoor state
meet, as
athletes are
invited based on
season
performance so
you get the best
of the best
squaring off in
one final indoor
meet.
We had some very
good
performances on
a day when the
meet schedule
got very far
behind (over two
hours at one
time) and girls
had to make a
few adjustment
to their normal
routine. We did
end up with a
couple school
records and some
lifetime best by
a few of the
girls, however
most importantly
we left the meet
with some
valuable big
meet experience
that will be
sure to help us
come late May.
Highlights of
the meet
included: |
|
|
| |
- Meghan once again tied her season-best school record mark of 11' 0", with no misses through 10' 6".
- Jessica threw just over 35', well off her season best, but gained some very valuable experience.
- The 3200m relay was put together with one sophomore (Tess) and three freshman (Cassidy, Liz, & Jessica). They would set a new FS Indoor mark of 9:46.8 (breaking the record of 9:55 from 1994, a team that included my wife and Coach Currins' daughter Carolyn) for 7th place. While the girls didn't quite run the race we had hoped, perhaps this is an omen. In 2005, the quartet of Brunk, Standridge, Bates, & Millin ran the exact same time at the IPTT meet and would go on the run 9:09 and change at the 2006 state meet, which still stands as our school record and one of the fastest in state history.
- Laura would go out very aggressive from lane one in her open 400m race to move into 2nd with 150m to go, but her hard early effort would cost her at the end, as she would fade to 5th. She did manage an all-time indoor PR of 59.83, good for 2nd all-time in PHS indoor history.
- The 4x 200m Relay of Morgan, Meghan, Valere, & Taylor would medal with a time of 1:47.7
- The 1600m race would see Becca run an all-time PR of 5:12.17 to move her to #6 on the all-time indoor list. Tess would bounce around a lot in the race and never quite looked comfortable, and a perhaps a bit flat, in her second 800m/1600m double in as many weeks. She would finish in 5:13, still her second best 1600m ever.
- The 4 x 400m relay of Morgan, Taylor, Laura, & Valere would close the night out with a bang by breaking the week old school record with their 4th place finish in 4:03.44. Taylor (60.9) and Valere (60.5) would both run all-time PR splits an move their names up the all-time PHS list.

March
21, 2011 - Lady
Pirates win MSL
Invite title in
record fashion |
|
Saturday the
Lady Pirates
competed in the
annual Mark
Saylor MSL
Invite that
serves as the
unofficial MSL
conference meet.
We came into the
meet with high
expectations and
lofty goals and
left the meet as
meet champions
with a total
team score of
112.5 to
outdistance
second place
Schaumburg with
69.5.
While the score
clearly shows a
dominant
team performance
by the Pirates
it does not even
touch on just
how impressive a
day we had.
This meet will
undoubtedly go
down to be the
greatest
team performance
in
an indoor meet
in school
history.
Taking advantage
of the always
tough MSL
competition
and year-old
digs of
the palatial
Merner
Fieldhouse on
the campus of
North Central
College we had
some of the most
impressive
performances in
school history
in nearly every
event.
From the first
final event of
the day (3200m
Relay) to the
last (4 x 400m
Relay) we saw
record after
record fall.
Awesome job
ladies.
You should all
be very proud of
what we
accomplished
this weekend.
More good things
to come this
outdoor season
if we can build
on this weekend.
Meet highlights
include (in
order of event):

- The 3200m relay of Courtney, Tess, Becca, & Sarah smashed the school record of 9:30.25 in running a new meet record time of 9:23.0. This with Courtney and Sarah splitting 2:21.8 each in their first races in almost a month. All four girls ran splits that would rank them in the top-10 all-time indoor. Tess broke Amy Laskowske's sophomore best of 2:18.8, with her 2:18.2, while Becca ran an all-time PR split of 2:21.2.
- The 4 x 200m relay of Laura, Meghan, Valere, & Morgan decided to get in of the record action themselves in the very next race as they would proceed to take down the school record in a winning time of 1:45.6. The previous PHS record was 1:47.0.
- Jessica Lincoln would break a record herself in her front running pursuit of her first conference title in the 3200m run. While she would get outkicked in her pace setting duties by a newcomer from Barrington, she did break an Amy Laskowske mark herself, running 11:23.7 to set a new all-time indoor freshman mark. As well, she did so in the presence of Amy, who happened to be on hand for the event.
- Meghan (55m HH) and Laura (55m Dash) would both make finals, with Meghan placing 2nd (8.6) and Laura placing 5th (7.4), bith tying their all-time best times.
- The 800m run would feature two freshman in Cassidy and Liz looking to pick up points in their first conference meet. Both looked like savvy veterans as they established themselves up near the front early. While only Cassidy would hang on for points, both would break the all-time PHS indoor best of 2:26.0 set by Carly Bates. Cassidy ended up fourth in 2:23.8 (which ties her for #8 all-time indoor) and Liz would end up 7th in 2:25.7 (just missing the all-time indoor list).
- Morgan and Valere would step to the track next in the 400m dash. Morgan would take the win in 59.9, her first time ever breaking :60 in the open 400m and now currently ranks as the #2 performance ever indoor. Valere would also set a new PR, running 60.8 for 5th, which also ranks her in the top 5 performers every indoor.
- AND THERE IS PLENTY MORE
- Tess and Becca would go 4-5 in the 1600m run. Tess ran an all-time PR of 5:11.2 (for #3 on the all-time indoor list) and Becca would cement her name on the all-time list as well at #9, with her 5:15.3, just off her all-time best.
- Laura would storm down the track in a lighting fast 25.8 to win the 200m in both a new school record (breaking her own mark of 26.3) and a new MSL meet record.
- For good measure the 4 x 400 relay of Valere, Taylor, Meg, & Morgan closed out the day with yet another school record of 4:04.8 in just missing the year old meet record set by Schaumburg. The previous school record of 4:06.2 was set back in 2002. All four girls ran splits that now rank in the top-10 in PHS history. Morgan's 60.0 split puts her #1 all-time for indoor Pirates, topping former All-stater Brianna Officer, one of Palatine's all-time great 400m runners. (Correction - Laura S. split :59.5 at York Invite). Before the race I mentioned to the girls "school record?" and they quickly struck a "really" look. Lots of smiles and hugs afterward to say the least.
- In the shot put Jessica De Re threw an all-time PR of 37' 4" for 4th that now ranks her in the top-10 on PHS' indoor list.
- Meg was the runner-up in the triple jump (34' 8"), while finishing 3-4 in the long jump with Valere (16' 8.25" & 16' 7.25")
- Taylor jumped an all-time personal best 32' 0.25" in the triple jump.
- Meghan won the pole vault in 10' 3", while Sakura tied for 6th (7' 3") to earn .5 point.
This gave us
four school
records on the
day (all 3
relays & Laura
in the 200m),
numerous
all-time bests,
and too many
marks that now
rank in our
all-time top-15
performer lists
to even count.
Very impressive
ladies.
I'm still in
awe.
I will be
updating our
all-time lists &
the season's
indoor
performance
list when I get
time. So
check back
later for those
updates.
