Science Department
Science preparation is done throughout the year by adding ACT type
questions to all tests. Strategies are explained and modeled by
the teachers. As the PSAE season approaches, in our target class
S332 Chemistry, a motivational and informational PowerPoint is
presented and sample, timed ACT science tests are given. For the
juniors that are not in S332, there will be three pullout sessions that
follow
the same structure. For juniors that do not have a science class, there will
be a separate three session pullout that will include format familiarity,
strategies and practice sessions.
English Department
To prepare for Day 1 of the PSAE (an ACT Reading test) every
junior
English student takes two full-length practice ACT Reading tests in class;
the first in January and the second in April.
Classes follow up each practice test by going through the tests with students
and helping them set individual goals and develop personal test-taking
strategies. Students are also given “mini-tests” (single-passage ACT Reading
sections that are 1/4 of an ACT Reading test) between the two full-length
practice tests so that they have opportunities to practice test taking
strategies and to get more comfortable with the test format.
To prepare for Day 2 of the PSAE (a WorkKeys Reading test) every
student also goes through a full length WorkKeys Reading test
in class and practices strategies appropriate for this exam.
Further PSAE preparation material is also available on the
English Department web site.
Social Studies Department
All junior History students take eight ACT-type reading
exams.
These readings are staggered over both semesters and are graduated
in implementation. Students start out with just one timed reading and
evaluate their results. Then over the course of the year move to two tests...
then three timed tests... then in April students take the full test of four
readings twice.
Math Department
Juniors take a practice WorkKeys mathematics test using
Keytrain software.
This will identify the specific needs for each student to address to improve
the WorkKeys component of the PSAE.
M317 Algebra II students are given multiple practice ACT mathematics
packets to work on.
The students are quizzed on these problems.
Each M317 student will take a 45-minute practice WorkKeys
mathematics test in class.
The M314 and M312 curriculum has the PSAE Prep imbedded into it,
therefore, every day is PSAE review day.
Special Education
We have a “Focus PSAE Prep Group” that is run by many
members
of our department called the PSAE Prep Team. The group meets every
other week on a rotational basis and the focus is on ACT and WorkKey
Preparation.
