FAQ

How do I site a pod cast?  /  How do I site a book with more than three authors?

A podcast is essentially an audio recording retrieved from the Web.  It can
be accessed through a Web browser or through a specialized program like
iTunes. If accessed through a Web browser, the file can be cited like any recording
found on a Web site (please see secs. 5.9.9a-b in the _MLA Handbook_ [6th
ed.]).

Below is an entry for the podcast of a radio show downloaded from a
Web page (the underline symbol indicates the start and end
of underlining):

"Carving Violins in Brooklyn." _The Leonard Lopate Show_. WNYC, New York.
         12 Apr. 2007. 13 Apr. 2007 <http://www.wnyc.org/shows/lopate/episodes/
         2007/04/12>.

The first date is when the program was broadcast.  (In the case of podcasts
that are not broadcast programs, the first date might be when the file was
posted online.)  The second date is when the writer retrieved it.  The URL
I've given is that of the Web page where the downloading link appears.
(The URL should not be underlined in a printed paper.)

If the file is accessed through a specialized program, you may not
have information about an originating Web site.  Unknown facts have to be
omitted from the citation.  Below is a minimal entry for a podcast accessed
through _iTunes_ for which the student knows only the author, the title of
the individual segment, the title of the overall program, the date when the
recording was posted, and the date of access:

Doe, Mary. "A Look at Shakespeare." _My Favorite Writers_. 5 Feb. 2007.
         13 Apr. 2007.

A user of _iTunes_ can determine the URL of the file by right-clicking (or,
on Mac, control-clicking) on its listing.  Then the URL can be added to the
citation:

Doe, Mary. "A Look at Shakespeare." _My Favorite Writers_. 5 Feb. 2007.
         13 Apr. 2007 < http://www.example.com/podcasts/ >.

How do I site a book with more than three authors?

For a book with more than 3 authors, you may name only the first and add et al.("and others"),
or you may give all the names in full in the order in which they appear on the title page (
see section 5.6.4 in 6th ed).
