TWO ATHLETES WAITING TO HEAR FROM
Forest Knight - 110 HH
Mike Yerkes - 800

back to top of page

LINE UP AS OF (Update as of Tuesday 6/9 7:00 PM - How Does This Line Up Look??)

THE ORDER OF NAMES DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE TO RUN THAT ORDER IN THE RELAYS.  THE 4 ATHLETES CAN DISCUSS THIS SO WE HAVE AN IDEA WHEN WE MEET IN WISCONSIN.

Our Goal is to fill open event spots with seniors who are state champions (sometimes 2nd or 3rd if extremely close - Looking at all three classes) given first choice, then we look at seniors who have had the top marks in the state heading into the state meet and have shown an interest in the meet, then we begin filling relays with seniors who placed in state using prelim and final times and have contacted us prior to the state meet (again, 1A, 2A, and 3A).  After these athletes have been given the opportunity to compete, we then begin filling the events with athletes that may not have qualified or placed at state due to whatever reason and have shown interest in the meet.  This has been the fairest way we have been able to come up with and allow as many athletes in the state a chance to compete together on one team - TEAM ILLINOIS.

We will work with you on making this line up, but we want to be fair to everyone participating.

Brief History of Spotlight Meet

In February, 1997, Presidents and officers from the coaches association from Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota met at the Wisconsin Clinic to discuss the state of track and field in our Midwest region and how we could enhance the sports through clinics and sharing of ideas.  John Nalley, then president of ITCCCA, had a proposal to start a quad state meet with Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota.  (Illinois had competed in the Midwest Meet of Champions in Indiana with Ohio and Michigan for nearly 20 years when it moved to Ohio after 1996, forcing us to withdraw from competing.)  The idea was to showcase the talents of the seniors in these four states and provide one more opportunity to compete against the best high school athletes in the Midwest.

Other reasons that John Nalley has pushed for the idea was because he had competed in the Midwest Meet of Champions in 1982 and wanted others to experience the competition out of state, being able to compete with fellow Illinois runners that you competed against during the last few years, and get to know other athletes from other states during the social and dinner times. This is a reward for all the hard work and dedication throughout high school.

In Februay, 1998, the presidents met again in Wisconsin.  Illinois and Iowa agreed to go with the meet in 1999 to get things started.  (Darryl Landas, Bruce Henderson, and Dick Washburn from Iowa have been instrumental in seeing that this meet took off and kept going).  At this time, Wisconsin had to begin organization of sending a team and Minnesota had a conflict with the date of another all star meet.

On June 12, 1999, the inaugural Spotlight Meet was held at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.  The meet was a dual meet between Illinois and Iowa.  One of the first track events, the 4x800 set the tone for the how the meet concept was going to materialize.  The Iowa Men defeated the Illinois Men by .12 (7:49.72 to 7:49.84).  It was a great start to what we hope is a great meet with great competition each and every year.

We are excited that Wisconsin (headed up by Bill deVoe, who was a member of the original meetings in 1997 and 1998) has been a competing team since the 2nd year (2000), Nebraska has visited us twice, and new to 2008 we will welcome a team from South Dakota.  This will be the 10th Annual Senior Spotlight meet as we compete for the seventh year in Cedar Falls, Iowa at the University of Northern Iowa.  Next year the meet will move for 3 years to UW-Platteville and then to a school in Illinois for the 3 years following that.
