April 1st, 2010 - Keeping Female Runners Healthy
Came across this video (courtesy of FloTrack.com) a while back and thought it would be good for all you girls to watch.  The interviewee is, Karen Harvey, the women's head XC coach at Florida State University, the 2009 NCAA XC runner-ups. (Side note - she was the head coach at University of Illinois up until 2006).  She was also a very successful All-American runner in both cross country and track at the University of Michigan in the mid-90's.  In this video she discusses some of the issues that contribute to female running-related health.  Great insight, from both a successful female athlete and coach, to keeping yourself healthy both short and long-term.
Video may take some time to load...if so, press play, then pause it to let it load up most of the way.

March 22nd, 2010 - History Making Day at MSL Indoor for Distance Crew
This past Saturday at the Mark Saylor MSL Indoor Invite hosted by Wheeling High School at Lewis University ended up being one of the most exciting and likely one of (if not the) top performance days ever for a Palatine Distance Crew.  In the process of helping our team to a dominant win of almost 50 points (122 to 73) over runner-up Hoffman Estates, we recorded some of the greatest performances in school history for the indoor season.

The mantra for the day was to not worry about splits, get out well and be competitive, and focus on the things you can control.  The 4 x 800m Relay kicked things off with the quartet of Tess, Johanna, Sarah and Becca leading off to a big win in a time of 9:35.7, which likely (will have to double check records) ranks as the second fastest All-Time Palatine indoor performance and set a new MSL Invite meet record. (Correction - after compiling previous records I found this time ranks as the 5th best ever indoor for a Palatine quartet, but fastest ever outside of the Prep Top Time meet - All-Time Top 4 x 800m Relay Teams).  Courtney had one of the best races of her career, and one of the most exciting of the day, to win the 3200m run in 11:01.5 (#2 All-Time indoor), to obliterate her previous best of 11:17 from outdoor and come within striking distance of Amy Laskowske's indoor school record of 10:58.  Running her first open 800m of the year Ruth blew past the indoor school record of 2:19.0 to run 2:17.2.  Lastly in the 1600m run Sarah moved to #5 on the All-Time indoor list with her 5:12.3 for a slight improvement to her indoor PR, while Tess dropped :08 seconds from her PR to run 5:16.3, giving her the fastest indoor 1600m ever by a Pirate freshman, the second best (Hinsdale Central's Jill Hardies - 5:16.2) in the state by a freshman for 2010, and the 10th fastest ever indoor by a Lady Pirate.

These performances are a testament to the work you have all been putting in, not only this winter, but last summer and fall as well.  It was so exciting as a coach to see you all rewarded with such outstanding performances.

4 x 800m Relay - We went into this race knowing we did not have our strongest line-up with Ruth opting for the open 800m instead.  However, once the race went off we got down to business and didn't look behind.  We knew Hoffman's depth would likely be our challenge, unless Schaumburg loaded their squad.  From the early going it was indeed us and Hoffman.  Tess did a good job of biding her time and with 300m to go made a big move to put us in the lead with her 2:23.7 (PR) leg.  Johanna got the baton with a slight lead over HE and did a good job extending our lead by pushing the pace early and handed off to Sarah still in the lead with a 2:27.4 (SB) split.  I told Sarah before the race it was her job to give Becca as much cushion as possible over any team behind us.  With other teams likely running their big guns at anchor I knew Becca may have her hands full.  Sarah ended up running 2:19.8 for the 5th fastest indoor 800m split in school history and gave us about a ten-second lead over Hoffman at the exchange.  With the big lead at hand and Hoffman handing to Haley Goers (coming in with a sub-2:20 season best) I knew Becca (coming in with a 2:30 season best) had to get out hard and she did just that.  Becca ended up running her best indoor time ever (2:25.1) by getting out hard and being aggressive.  While Goers did close a bit in the middle, it was clear by 500 or 600m that she'd have to pull out something amazing to overtake Becca.  We ended up running 9:35.7 for one of the fastest relay times in school history and faster than the quartet at York that included Ruth.  Very proud of this group.

3200m run - This race include some of the best names from last fall in cross country with Courtney, HE's Schmidt, Schaumburg's Falsey, and Prospect's super-frosh Wolfe set to do battle.  Courtney showed no fear from the gun and went right to the front and took control.  She had a clear lead for the first 800m (2:40), before a pack of three (Schmidt, Falsey, & Wolfe) moved up to close in on Courtney as they went through 1600m in 5:25.5 (Courtney's PR for 1600m is only 5:23.7).  At this point I was expecting Schmidt to make a move and others to go with and Courtney would have to catch a ride or get dropped.  However, about a lap or so later Falsey started to fall off the back of the pack as Courtney kept the hammer down.  Another lap later Courtney put in a surge and Schmidt and Wolfe were showing signs of struggle.  It was clear Courtney was still in control and with 800m to go she was off to the races.  At this point it wasn't a matter of her winning, but by how much.  With 600m to go, sub-11:00 was a real possibility, but she would have to get moving. She closed her last 400m in :82 seconds, just missing the 11:00 mark, but finished in a huge PR of 11:01.5 to come within :03 seconds of Amy's school indoor record, giving her the #2 All-Time indoor performance and the fastest time ever for a Palatine junior indoor.

Emily got out well, going through 1600m in 5:43, however she was nursing a sore hamstring and got stuck running alone for too long, ending up with a disappointing 12:02 for the day.

800m run - Ruth went into this race with Shane Evan's 2:19.0 school record in the back of her mind, but her February injury and lack of racing had definitely put some doubt in her head.  I knew she was fit enough to get it, but did she.  Doubts or not she went straight to the front and took control early with Schaumburg's 800m All-Stater Karen Lesiewicz in tow.  Ruth looked smooth and relaxed at 200m (:33.0) and even better as she came through 400m in :66.9 (:33.9).  Her third 200m would set her up for the finish and she did a good job of keeping the pace up as she slowed only slightly with a :34.5 lap to come through 600m in 1:41.4.  With less than at lap to go Lesiewicz made her move and you could quickly see the expression on Ruth's face change and a drop in her form.  As she came around the backstretch I yelled for her to "stay positive".  Ruth seemed to get her head back into the race and closed with a :35.8 to finish 2nd behind a great run by Lesiewicz (2:15.6) to capture a new indoor school record of 2:17.2

Although her splits were lost, Johanna closed out a solid double for the day with a 2:30.1 finish for her second 800m of the day.

1600m run - This race is always a highlight of any MSL meet and this years version was no different.  Including some of the top names in the state we were sure to see some solid performances.  With Sarah, Tess, and HE's Schmidt & Goers all doubling back from an earlier race, Schaumburg's kicker Petrey in her first race of the day would certainly have the upper-hand in this battle.  Sarah went right to the front (400m in :74.0), with all others seemingly satisfied having her doing the early pace work.  A pack of 6-7 girls, including Tess, were tightly bunched at 800m (2:33.8) as the second quarter had slowed drastically to a :79.8.  At this point HE's Goers went to the front and gapped the field just a bit, while Sarah and Tess each traveled the third 400m in an even slower :81.6.  With 400m to go, the front three (Goers, Petrey, & Sarah) had started to pull away and Goers was desperately trying to put some distance on an always fast-closing Petrey.  However, it would not be enough, as Petrey edged her down the straight 5:10.3-5:10.8.  Sarah was all alone in 3rd with a new indoor PR and #5 All-Time indoor performance of 5:12.3.  Tess' excellent race got a bit lost in all the action up front, but she closed well to just out lean HE's Schmidt at the line to run 5:16.3, the fastest ever indoor for a Palatine freshman and the 10th best on the All-Time indoor list.

March 19th, 2010 - Be in the Moment & Just Believe

I recently read an article entitled, Being in the Moment: Shut Down Your Brain and Just Believe (Running Times Magazine, April 2010, Tamara Rice Lave), about confidence and believing in yourself.  It discussed how many athletes never reach their fullest potential because their minds hold them back.  They think too much about the future, and negatively about what might happen, not focusing on the moment they are in and what they can control.  Below are some interesting quotes from the article.

·         “February,” responded Joaquin Cruz when asked “When did you know you were going to win?” during an interview after his Olympic gold medal in the 800m run in August of 1984.  (The surprised interviewer was expecting him to discuss the final stretch of the actual race, but Joaquin had the belief he was going to win since February of that year.)

·         Entering the 1964 10k Olympic final with a qualifying time nearly a minute slower than the top runners, Billy Mills convinced himself he could win by using “a form of self-hypnosis” in which for four years he “visualized winning dozens of times a day.”  He went on to win gold in one of the most surprising upsets of the ’64 Games.  (Watch the videos below of Mills winning gold and him talking about his “self-hypnosis”)

·         “Athletes like Mills and Cruz excelled in part because they were able to stay firmly planted in the present.”

·         “If you can be in your body, focused and in the moment, you can do everything to your best.  You can’t think about what happened or what will happen, but you have to focus on this stride and one this breath.  Athletes who get ahead of themselves can get paralyzed with anxiety and stress.”

When you are in a workout or a race, focus on what you can control.  You can’t control how fast someone else will run, throw, or jump.  You can’t change what happened earlier in the day, the previous meet, or even the previous lap.  Believe in the work you have put in and trust in your abilities to manage the present.

March 18th, 2010 - Six Distance Crew Members Medal at McNamara Invite
Wednesday night at Rolling Meadows the JV competed in their final indoor meet of the season at the unofficial version of the MSL JV indoor conference meet, called the Shannon McNamara Invite.  We did have some season bests and near PR's on the tight 150m purple track.  Overall the meet is not scored, but we did take home medals (top 6) in the 4 x 800m Relay, Kristen in the 3200m run, Marlena & Kelsey in the 800m run, and Ellen took home top honors in the 1600m run, just missing the meet record.

4 x 800m Relay - I unfortunately missed this race (and I heard our team almost did), as myself and Currins were coming from varsity practice and the initial start time was quite a bit earlier than expected.  Lesson learned, check in early to find the start time of the meet.  If a coach is not available, talk to a meet official or to a coach from the host school.

From my understanding there was a mini-manhunt to find the team (Stephanie, Morgan, Jacqui, & Ellen) as the teams were lining up, and we barely made it to the start line just seconds before the gun went off.  Definitely not the way to start a race.  There also seemed to be some confusion as to lap counting and hand-offs, as the 150m track was a new experience for most of the squad.  We ended up running 10:51 for 3rd place, which equates to just under 2:43 average per girl.  Slower than I expected, as I know each is in shape to run sub-2:40, but respectable for the circumstances and track size.  From reports, there may have been a lap count snafu, as there was confusion as to whether or not Jacqui ended up running one lap too long on the third leg and Ellen ended up a lap short on her final leg.  While this would not have changed the overall distance for the team, an extra lap for Jacqui would have definitely altered her performance and slowed our finish time.

Either way we need to learn from this and be better prepared in the future.

3200m run - With Allison still nursing a sore ankle, Kristen got moved from the planned 3200m relay and was back to run her second deuce in less than a week, as was Liz..  Both got out similar to last week, going through the 1600m run together in 6:15 (:07 seconds faster than last Friday), so both were on pace for season bests.  They stuck together for another 400m before Kristen put in a couple surges to attempt to move her way up similar to her last race.  At one point late in the race Kristen got into a 2-3 lap battle with HE's eventual winner Delahunt by holding her off as she was attempting to lap her.  At the time Kristen didn't realize the girl was the leader, but was fighting desperately to hold her off.  Even thought the hard surges may have been a bit too much at that particular stage, I loved the fight and grit to mix it up late in the race and this likely helped her avoid the late race slowdown that can happen when you get all alone.  Kristen would end up medaling with a 5th place finish and missed her PR from York by less than :01 second.  Liz struggled again late in the race, but did a much better job of fighting this time around (running about :30 seconds faster than at York) and kept herself more composed even though it was not the race she wanted, just missing a medal in 7th place.

800m run -  The 800m race featured both Marlena and Kelsey in the fastest of three heats.  Marlena got out pretty well and was fairly established in 2nd or 3rd through 200m, while Kelsey was well off the back end of the pack at this point.  By 400m the Propect girl had put some separation on the field and it was decision time for Marlena if she wanted to be in contention for the win, as she was a clear second, but losing ground on the leader.  Kelsey had wisely began her march up into the field of runners.  Not much changed over the next 200m and Marlena would need a big kick to close on the Propect girl who was clearly in discomfort.  While she would close a bit, it was too little too late as she ended up second in a respectable 2:37.0.  Kelsey would move up to medal in 5th with a :02 second Open 800m PR from last year indoor.

1600m run - This race turned out to be a solo run for Ellen most of the way, as she took clear command of the race by 400m (:78) and was alone the remainder of the race. By 800m (2:45) she had increased her lead and it was up to her to keep the pressure on.  She did a good job of not slowing the rest of the way (400 splits of :78.1, :88.1, :88.2, :88.3), but didn't have to closing speed to break 5:40, running 5:42.3.  However, she did pick up the lone Distance Crew victory of the night in a new All-Time 1600m PR, just missing the meet record held by former Pirate Laura Boruta ('06) of 5:42.1 set during her freshman year in 2003.  Kirsten struggled in her first 1600m since breaking 6:00 at Glenbard East two weeks ago, as she never seemed to get in a good rhythm and her pacing was quite erratic.  Even with that, she ran her second best time ever and will be much better prepared in the future with the lessons she learned in this race.

McNamara Invite Distance Crew Splits
March 15th, 2010 - Numerous PR's and Season Bests at York Invite
This past Friday night proved to be a success for the Lady Pirates Distance Crew at a six-team meet at York's Joe Newton Fieldhouse.  As expected, entering mid-March and seeing a 200m track for the first time since our opener at Proviso, we had most girls post season best performances and some with all-time PR's.

4 x 800m Relay - We started the meet off with a solid performance in this event with both Varsity and Frosh-Soph season best times.  The FS team kicked off the night with Ellen (2:36), Kelsey (2:45), & Jacqui (2:44) leading off in season best 800m splits to put us in second place about 30m behind York with Kirsten anchoring us home.  Kirsten (2:43) made a rookie mistake going for broke on lap one and was taught a quick lesson about being too excited and aggressive early.  Her first 200m was the fastest of the quartet, but her last 600m proved to be the slowest.  She valiantly held on for second place (about 5 seconds back of York) and helped lead us to the best F-S time of the year.

In the Varsity race we put together our best line-up of the year and were looking for a big improvement over our season best of 9:57.  Ruth was back for only her third meet of the year and led us off in 2:22, but was 1-2 seconds back of York's Frigo, who had a great run.  Tess took the baton from Ruth and quickly made up the difference, paid the price a bit and struggled in the middle, but did manage a 2:27 for a season best.  McIntosh (2:22) got the baton and we stayed fairly even most of the way until she closed hard to give us about a :03 second lead.  Courtney (2:24) really put the race away early by wisely running hard and aggressive the first 600m (fastest 400m & 600m splits of quartet).  She slowed quite a bit in the last 200m, but held on to give us a :04 second win (9:36-9:40) over a solid York squad.  This performance ranks as one of the best indoor 4 x 800m relay times in school history.

3200m run - This race saw a big pack of five or six run behind the state cross country champ for the first 1200m or so, before the pace quickened and spread the field.  Emily fell off the pace a little earlier than I would have liked, but did end up with a indoor PR of 11:42 to move herself back up on the indoor all-time list just ahead of Tess.  Emily was 5:45 at 1600m, but got stuck running all alone the last 2000m or so, however did  a job of keeping the tempo up mid-race and closed well the last 800m.  Kristen was the other story in this race.  Running her first 3200m ever we talked about going sub-13:00 just prior to the race and she did just that.  She went through 1600m in 6:22 (only :08 seconds off her PR), hanging right with Elizabeth, and did an excellent job of moving up the remainder of the race to finish in 12:53.9 for one of the best performances of her career.

800m run - Not too much excitement in this race. Johanna (2:28) and Becca (2:30) each had season best performances, but both could have run faster had they been more aggressive earlier on in this big field of runners.  Both passed 400m around :71+/- seconds and 600m in the 1:50 range.  Stephanie (2:39), Jeniece (2:52), Krista (2:57), and Jessie (3:00) all ran their season bests.

400m run - Laura Schweikert got her first crack at a fresh open 400m race of the season in this race and took full advantage, crossing the line first in a time of 60.4 for a new sophomore class school record.  To add to her impressive 400m race, she would double back 25 minutes later to break Brianna Officer's varsity indoor school record in the 200m with a time of 26.3.

1600m run - The varsity race featured the same four from the 3200m relay doubling back and looking to help each other to season bests.  All four were out together in the front through 400m (:75-:76) and would split in to pairs by the halfway point, with Sarah and Ruth 1-2 in 2:35 and Courtney and Tess 3-4 about a second or two back .  With 400m to go Sarah and Ruth had slowed, but had extended their lead going through in 3:55.  Tess and Courtney were not far back in 4:01.  Sarah would pull away the last 200m just miss her PR running 5:13.9, Ruth would hit her best ever indoor time of 5:19.2 to move into the top 15 all-time, and Courtney & Tess would finish together in 5:23.7 for PR's and close out a 1-2-3-4 finish.  Tess's time ranks as one of the top 3 or 4 times ever for a freshman indoor.

Ellen took second in the FS race with a season best of 5:45 and Jacqui just dipped under the 6:00 minute barrier for the first time, with a new PR of 5:59.7.

March 9th, 2010 - '06 Grad and All-Stater Carly Bates-Wells speaks to team
On Tuesday evening we had the pleasure of listening to one of Palatine's all-time greats speak to the team on being successful and the importance of proper nutrition.  Carly is in her senior year at Bowling Green State University in Ohio where she is a member of the track and cross country teams and a nutrition major.

Carly was a 3x All-Stater in track as a member of one state champ and two runner-up 3200m relay teams.  The '06 team holds the current school record of 9:09, which at the time broke the state record in that event.  As well, Carly ran on three state cross country teams, including being the #4 runner for two state trophy teams, the '05 third place team and the '03 state runner-up team

Nutrition for Peak Performance
March 5th, 2010 - McIntosh & Wasowicz shake up All-time indoor lists
Our primary goal coming into this meet was to start racing more aggressively and attacking the early phases of our race.  In doing so we had a number of solid performances and season bests.  We ended the night with 18 season best performances and four indoor PR's from our Distance Crew, including two performances that rank high on the All-time indoor lists.

Sarah and Tess had two of the best performances of the night as they both had top 15 all-time indoor runs.  Sarah improved her indoor best from last year by one-tenth of a second, in running 5:12.8, and is now tied with my wife (Jenny Monaco) as the 6th best indoor miler in school history.  In her first attempt at the track 3200m run, Tess ran a solo 11:43.3 on the 177m track and bumped Emily from 15th to 16th on the current list.  Tess currently ranks as the 13th best indoor performer and coincidently is one of only two girls on the list with their best time coming at Glenbard East....the other, my wife.

4 x 800m Relay - On the varsity level we had to shake things up a bit as Courtney left school early in the day due to sickness.  Laura (2:32) was a last second addition and had the pleasure of leading off in her very first 800m race.  She did a good job getting out and hitting splits of :35, :71, 1:49, before struggling a bit the last 200m and being overtaken by a hard closing Montini girl.  Marlena took the baton in second and quickly moved us to the front to run an encouraging 2:34.  By the time Marlena got the stick to Sarah we were well out in front and left to time trial the rest of the way.  Sarah did a good job of getting out, hitting splits of :34, :69, 1:47 on her way to a season best 2:24.4.  Ruth anchored us home after missing three meets with a sore ankle, running a solo 2:27.0 (:33, :70, 1:48) while expectantly struggling just a bit the last 200m in her first race in a while.  The team did manage to run the second sub-10:00  (9:58.8) team time with two different members than the Proviso 9:57 team.

The Frosh-Soph team got a bit lost in the mix as they ran in the varsity race, but did manage one season best with Kelsey's lead-off 2:48.3 split.

3200m run - Tess, Ellen, and Erin were all running their first 3200m race ever, so one good thing was definitely expected...PR's.  Tess not only got a PR, but ended up running the best 3200m debut in school history, topping Amy Laskowske's 11:57 solo run in the same meet in 2003. (Correction - Sarah ran 11:45.8 in '08 at York in her debut).  Amy would go on to win state that year.  Ellen was a bit under the weather and was never really in the race, but did manage 2nd place in 12:47.  Erin was by herself early and finished in 13:40 in her first attempt to win the FS level.

800m - Johanna led this race from the gun with little competition hitting splits of :34, :72, and 1:51 on her way to a 2:30.2 finish, just missing her pre-race goal of sub 2:30. (Correction - Johanna was given 2:29.9 in official results) The JV race saw Jacqui close hard the last lap on the eventual winner to end up 2nd in a PR of 2:49.8.  She will run much faster if she can be confident enough to be more aggressive in the early part of the race.

400m  - Kelsey :72.3 and Kristen :73.8 for all-time personal bests.  Marlena with a strong :67.7 after the 3200m relay leg.

1600m run -  Kirsten got this race kicked off at the FS level with her first sub-6:00 performance running from the front and pushing the pace early with splits of :83 & 2:52 to set herself up well.  She closed well enough, running the last 800m in 3:03 to finish in 5:55.

In the varsity race, Sarah attacked early and had some help from Batavia's All-Stater Sampson for the first 800m as they passed splits of :74 & 2:33.  Sarah was in the clear by 900m and left alone to push the pace.  She was in good position to break 5:10 as she went through 1200m in 4:12, but would need a mid :70's to do so.  She ended up closing in :79 to finish in a very encouraging 5:12.8 indoor PR.  Emily just missed her 1600m outdoor best running aggressive early, but slowed a bit too much in the middle phases of the race.  She did manage a big season best and should look to move up the all-time indoor 3200m list next week at York.  Elizabeth looked much better than she has all season and looks to be putting the her winter health issues behind her in running 6:03 to close back in on the sub-6:00 range.

4 x 400m Relay - No season bests or PR's here, but Marlena had the pleasure of handing off with Glenbard East's Rakosnik (5th at state last spring as freshman), who split :58, to out her night with another sub-:70 (:69.1) after being a last second addition for an ill Johanna.

Glenbard East Distance Crew Splits
March 1st, 2010 - Good workout at Bolingbrook for Distance Crew
With this being a dual meet only, us and Bolingbrook, we had the opportunity for girls to compete in multiple events and approach this meet more as a workout while still racking up some points.   After a full week of training on the cold hard roads, this meet was a chance for us to get in some good quality work inside.  We did end up winning the varsity meet, while just getting edged on the Frosh-Soph level.  However, had Harpreet been given the 3200m F/S win, instead of being placed in the varsity scoring, we would have won both levels.

Overall, I thought we did a decent job.  We did get some harder running in, but some of you were a bit off on the times you were expected to meet.  We need to do a better job of focusing and putting in the effort to hit splits that are given if we have another meet like this.  There were very few PR's, or even season bests, achieved with the approach taken to this meet, but there were some good things that happened.

4 x 800m Relay - This race was set up as a workout for the two varsity teams with girls fairly evenly matched up together.  The goal was to hit times estimated around current 1600m pace.  Tess and Jo were off (+:03-:04) sec.), Becca and Emily were solid at 2:40, Courtney and Sarah were off (+:05 sec.), and Ellen was off just a few (+:02:-:03) as well.  Everyone did a good job working together, running smartly off the shoulder of one another, and taking turns with pace, but were just a bit slower than planned.  The two teams finished 1-2 with Ellen pulling away from Kelsey just a bit the last 100m.  The F-S girls won their race with Kirsten being the solo PR (2:42.6) for the race.

3200m run - Allison and Harpreet got their first taste of the indoor 3200m run in this race.  Each did a great job of getting out early and establishing a good tempo  Allison led all but the first lap or two of the race going through 1600m in 6:25, with Harpreet back in 3rd at 6:34.  Harpreet was only :07 seconds back of her 1600m PR of 6:27.  Allison did a great job of pushing the pace the 3rd 800m as she ran a 3:20 after running a 3:25 the 2nd 800m.  She went on to run 3:12 for the last 800m to finish in 12:57.  Harpreet kept closing on the 2nd place Bolingbrook girl, but just couldn't quite close the gap enough after her fast first mile and finished 3rd in 13:50, three seconds back of the runner-up.

800m run - This race saw most of the girls either coming back from the 3200m Relay or prepping for a 1600m, just 45 minutes away.  For the relay girls, the plan called for a  a relaxed first 400m and to close with a hard last 400m.  We did a little better in this compared to our relay splits, but most of you were still a tad slow for the first 400m.  Sarah and Courtney were out in :77 and closed in :75 for a 1-2 photo-finish in 2:33.  The 1600m girls were set out to run around their mile pace.  Kristen Olsen won the FS race with a late kick in 2:55.

600m run - The 600m saw four of our girls take the race out and run together most of the way.  Laura opened up a big lead early on, but slowed way too much the middle 200m and allowed Jo and Tess back in the race as they crossed 400m in :70, just a second back.  Tess closed the gap with about 160 to go and made a move around the last turn to get around Laura.  Laura did good job a hanging on and leaned at the finish for the win, as both were timed in 1:46.9.  Johanna improved her St. Charles 600m time with a 1:48.2.  In the FS race, Kelsey Larsen took three seconds off her previous best to run 1:56.6.

1600m run - In the varsity race Morgan and Liz ran in a pack of three most of the way with the 3200m runner-up from Bolingbrook.  Liz did most of the work before being overtaken in the last 400m by Morgan who went on to victory in 6:14, with Liz not far back in 6:16.  In the FS race, Jacqui had the run of the day as she led the race from the beginning and dropped almost 10 seconds from her 1600m (XC time trial) PR by running 6:13.

4 x 400m Relay - The final race of the day saw a number of girls closing out the day with a hard 400m.  Sarah (:64.3),  Ellen (:71.8), and Marlena (:70.9) all ran seasonal bests, with Courtney (:67.7) getting an all-time PR and Emily (:69.7) just missing her best of :69.3.

February 22nd, 2010 - Lady Pirates finish well in tough weekend double
This past weekend is one of the mentally toughest we will face all season long.  In only our second week of racing we got the opportunity to compete in a late night meet at St. Charles East and rise early the next morning for Downers Grove North.  After a rough last two weeks of practice, we also had to face the challenges of long commutes to each destination and little recovery time between meets.  However, even with all the circumstances, I thought we did an excellent job at both meets and definitely got in some good work and learning experiences.

St. Charles East Co-ed - Friday, Feb 19th
We have been traveling to this meet for years, since is coincides with state gymnastics weekend and allows us a chance to get some running in since we are locked out of the building at home.  With Downers looming the next morning, this meet serves more as a workout night with most girls in only one event.  The 160m track is always a bit of a rude awaking to the legs after running at Proviso the week before.  When running at SCE you can usually assume that if you can match your time from Proviso you have likely had a better performance.

Meet Highlights:
  • Sarah McIntosh runs 3:08.6 (she ran 3:14 in '09) for 1000m to outkick SCE's Mallory Abel (sister of former Pirate and '06 grad Ryan Abel)
  • Kristen Olsen had a good double, setting PR's in both the 800m (2:48.7 split) and 1600m (6:19.2)
  • Johanna and Becca went 2-3 (behind Abel) in the 600m in 1:49.1 & 1:49.6
  • Courtney had the run of the night, running an 800m PR of 2:28.4 on the tight 160m track
  • Ellen Smith got the chance to beat up on some boy's as they ran girls and boys together in the 1600m run (5:54).
  • Tess took the varsity 400m (:67.3) and helped lead the 4x 400m relay to victory with a :66.1 split
  • Marlena runs solid 2:35 in first week since ending basketball
  • Laura S. runs :62.7 400m split in first week since ending basketball

Downer Grove North - Saturday, Feb 20th
After a late night return home on Friday, we boarded the busses early to head to Downers Grove North for a quad meet with DGN, Crete-Monee, & Glenbard West.  As expected, it was visible that many of you were clearly quite tired after Friday's late night.   However, we still did see some great performances out on the track.

On the distance side, Courtney Brown closed out her great weekend with an incredible performance in the 3200m run.  Courtney ran 11:27.5, all while having to pass lapped runners the last half of the race and holding off All-stater Samantha Fry of DGN.  This time ranks Courtney as the #5 All-time best indoor 3200m performer in Palatine school history.  Courtney showed this weekend she is more than capable of running sub-11:00 this spring and put herself in contention for All-state honors.

Other Meet Highlights:
  • Tess runs 5:40 in the 1600m run for 2nd
  • Kristen O. break 1600m PR from Friday night, running 6:14.6
  • Allison nears 6:00 in the 1600m (6:06)
  • Jessie dropped her 1600m XC time trial time of 7:09 to 6:41
  • Caitlyn Campbell run 6:27 for 1600m PR
  • Stephanie Burbidge runs 2:42 in 800m after missing '09 with knee surgery
  • Johanna doubles 800m/1600m in 2:31/5:48

February 18th, 2010 - Don't let your past hold you back
A friend of mine recently sent this to me and it made me think about the mindset of an athlete.  Many of us are held back mentally from success due to past failures or bad experiences.  You all must believe you are more capable than your past experiences have shown.  Maybe you've never considered yourself to be a gifted athlete or capable of achieving a certain performance level because you've never done it before.  Those simple thoughts will always hold you back from reaching your dreams and goals.

Don't be afraid to break from those chains holding you back and you can achieve what you may currently believe to be impossible.  Click to enlarge

February, 16th, 2010 - Pirate grad Laskowske runs 16:25 for 5000m
This past weekend 2006 Palatine graduate and University of Minnesota senior, Amy Laskowske, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships by running the 5000m in a time of 16:25.12 (just 5 seconds from her all-time best) to finish 3rd at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, IA.  Amy currently ranks 20th in the nation and will have to improve her time to make the NCAA meet in March.

Amy's time equates to an average of just under 5:18 per mile for 3.1 miles.  You can watch Amy's race online at FloTrack.com.

In Amy's race, Iowa State senior Lisa Koll, ran 15:29 (that's under 5:00 per mile) for the win and the 3rd fastest indoor 5000m ever by a collegian female.
February 12th, 2010 - Proviso West Quad
Thursday the Lady Pirates competed in their first meet of this short 2010 indoor season at Proviso West.  This meet is always an interesting event with some getting their first ever indoor track experience and all getting chance to see just what kind of shape they are in after a long winter off-season.  The burning lungs, dry throats, and red faces were all signs that it's been a long time since we've raced and we all have a lot of work ahead of us if we expect to see similar results to what we saw in the fall.

The 3200m relay kicked off the season.  The quartet of Johanna, Ruth, Courtney, & Sarah won in a time of 9:57.0 for the earliest sub-10:00 clocking in a number of years.  Two evenly matched Frosh-Soph teams took 1st and 2nd in times of 10:58 & 11:10.  Tess cruised to an easy win in the FS 400m in :66.6.  Freshman Kirsten Slora got her first ever high school win in the FS 800m run in a time of 2:44, while Becca Sund took 2nd in the Varsity 800m run with an encouraging 2:31 after missing the end of cross country and most of Polar Bear with a stress fracture.  A slew of girls ran in the 1600m run with Ruth, Sarah, & Courtney finishing 1-2-3 all in 5:27, while Emily nipped Ellen to take the FS 1600m run 5:51.0-5:51.6.

Overall, a pretty good first meet.  However this is just a starting point.  We still have loads of work to do if we expect to get much better.  This a challenging part of the season with cold, windy, and snowy weather, but this is the time to put in the extra work.  Come each day with a positive attitude and make sure each day counts.

January 28th, 2009 - Ruth Allen to become an ISU Redbird

This past weekend 6x all-stater Ruth Allen made a verbal commitment to continue her running career at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal.  Ruth will be awarded a split academic/athletic scholarship for her achievements.

Ruth is ranked in the top of her senior class and scored in the 30's on her ACT.  She is a 2x All-State, 3x All-MSL, and ranks in the top 25 all-time Deer Grove performers in cross country.  In track she ranks second in school history in the 800m run (2:13.0), was a member of the 2nd and 3rd best 3200m relay teams, and has earned All-State track honors four times (800m run & 3x 3200m relay)  in her career.  She was 4th in the 2009 IHSA State 800m run.

Ruth will join a honorable list of former Pirates to run for the Redbirds.  Former Pirates Diana Ainsley('01), Suzy Turner('04), Brianna Officer('05), & Michelle Brunk('07) have all competed successfully for ISU.

Ruth's leadership was a big part of our success this past season and she will be greatly missed.  Congrats!
January 26, 2009 - Track is Back!!!
Wednesday after school marks the official start of the Palatine girls track season. We will meet by the lockeroom then head up stairs to the 2nd floor.  Dress to go outside (hat, gloves, jacket) and return for work indoors.  All paperwork needs to be competed and returned to the athletic office.  Make sure your physical is up to date.  Bring a friend.
January 12, 2009 - Parks and Currins honored as 2009 Coaches of the Year
Last Saturday, January 9th, Coach Currins and Coach Parks were each honored as 2009 Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Coaches of the Year.  Coach Currins was named 2009 Class AA Girls Track Coach of the Year for helping lead the Lady Pirates to a runner-up finish at the IHSA State Meet last spring.  This was the eighth time Coach Currins has been awarded this honor.  Coach Parks was awarded 2009 Class AAA Cross Country Coach of the Year after the Lady Pirates won the state title in his first year as head coach at Palatine.  This is his second time winning this award.  This was one of the only, if not the only, times a school has had their track and cross country coaches each honored in the same year.

The coaches would like to thank all the girls for their hard work and dedication, as these awards are attributed greatly to the success of the athletes.  They would also like to thank Ruth Allen, Courtney Brown, and Sarah McIntosh for coming and supporting the coaches as they received their awards last Saturday.
January 7, 2010 - Good Luck Charm #2 due at end of July
Since little Sophia seemed to bring so much luck to the team this year in her first season supporting the Pirates , Mrs. Parks and I decided we'd better make sure we have another in time for the 2010 season to kick off.

We would like to announce we will be having a new addition to the Pirate XC family and fan club at the end of July.
